What is the PEC?

 

If you’ve ever needed to know how to get your baby to sleep through the night, how to stop your toddler from throwing himself down on the ground in the middle of the grocery store or how to explain the loss of a grandparent or favorite pet to a small child, then this is the place to look for guidance.  Looking for a good book to read to your child at night?  Planning a storytime program for your preschool class?  Looking to get into storytelling as a hobby?  The PEC collection can help you there too!  Our Parenting and Early Childhood collection is available at each of our 10 branches as well as the Hughes Main Library.

Every Child Ready to Read

Ready to Read

The Greenville County Library System has an exciting program series designed to help get “Every Child Ready To Read®.” Current research shows that children who learn six critical pre-reading skills before they start kindergarten become better readers. Children who do not know these skills when they come to school have a much more difficult time learning to read.

You can learn about the six skills and how to develop them in children from birth to age five @ your library. Each of the programs explains why the skills are so important, demonstrates how to help children learn the skills, provides titles of high-interest books that are age appropriate, and sends you home with early literacy activities to incorporate into your family’s daily routine.

Every Child Ready to Read® Workshops 
Attention parents, daycare providers and caregivers! Would you like to learn simple steps that will help to prepare your infant or young child for later reading success? Our staff is eager to share their skills and experience in the area of Early Literacy. Call 527-9249 to schedule an Every Child Ready to Read® workshop at your location for a minimum of 12 adults. May select from a 1.5 or 2.5 hours workshop approved by SC Department of Social Services for childcare training hours.

Laugh 'n' Learn for Reading Readiness!
Monthly at the West Branch on Anderson Road – Check the calendar for dates/times
Interact with your child at each of our early literacy play spaces (music, crafts, puzzles, etc.). Take ideas home with you. Practice them for a future payoff in school readiness and reading success for your child. Ages 4 and under with an adult caregiver. English/Spanish materials available. No groups; maximum of three children per adult caregiver.
